UGANDANS ''saying no to GMOs'' is GOOD for their small farms and the ENVIRONMENT.

Image
Current industrial agriculture aims to increase crop yields while reducing production costs but the impacts of those goals can be detrimental to the environment, biodiversity, health and sustainability. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a product of industrial agriculture. Genetic modification is a gene-altering technology used to introduce new characteristics to a plant, which may improve its resilience to harsh environments, pests and pathogens. Genetic modification sounds like a promising option on the surface but it raises ethical, political, economic, environmental and social concerns that steer many people away from growing GM crops. GM seeds are most often designed to be resistant to Roundup, the brand name of a chemical herbicide produced by Monsanto. ‘Roundup Ready’ crops like soybean, maize, beans and potatoes have been altered genetically so they do not die after being sprayed with Roundup. This allows farmers to spray Roundup on fields to kill weeds bu...

LAND FRAGMENTATION AND POOR DEMOCRATIZATION LEAD CAUSE OF HUNGER IN UGANDA.

Image
What is causing hunger in Uganda? And which part of Uganda is affected most?     President Museveni has on several occasions urged Ugandans and political leaders to sensitize the people against land fragmentation saying the practice, rampant among the predominantly agriculture dependent communities threatens food security and is a source of poverty. The biggest challenge facing Ugandan agriculture today is land fragmentation associated with the traditional inheritance practices and polygamy. Land fragmentation is more like a curse that can bind people into poverty. Land is a long-term capital asset but most people in Uganda don't understand this fact. When they break up land into smaller pieces, they sell those small plots. But there is nothing more dangerous than abruptly earning huge sums of money but lack financial literacy skills. Those who sell inherited land will end up being poor again despite earning millions. it's because in most cases they lack literacy ...

REASONS FOR STAGNATION OF UGANDAs ART INDUSTRY.

Image
So many promising actors, artistes, writers, directors and producers in Uganda's entertainment industry but what is lacking is the right synergy, collaboration and advocacy to establish the intellectual rights framework to make the apparent industry functional as a true mine. To every art there is an underlying science and to every science there must be a corresponding art of presentation which makes it appealing for engagement. There is a reason why we have two hemispheres in our brain. A movie without the right scientific research that enables the connection and relatability will fall flat. There is a reason behind music scores and soundtracks to stimulate the viewers and facilitate connection and the psychology works. Some guy called Collins working with UCC once established the first of its kind studio in Mbarara (RAIL 24) in 2018, a fully furnished studio with modern technology, equipment and personnel. But how many movie producers understood the essence of this or ...

Decolonizing African Beauty and cease Bleaching and Eurocentric beauty standards.

Image
In Africa, colonization had two main components. Infiltration: Stripping away culture, self, indoctrinating Africans and Appropriation: looting, pillaging the culture and treasure, commercializing and passing them off as their own while massively profiting at the expense of the colonized.   Infiltration: For centuries, Black people/Africans (especially Black women) have been conditioned to believe that our features are somehow less desirable. The full lips, wide noses, influences of European standards have permeated and persisted, skewing expectations of beauty for every ethnicity.    Eurocentric features such as a pointy nose, lighter skin, thinner lips, straight hair, slim figure, wider eyes, blue eyes etc, are “beautiful”, everything else isn’t which has made skin bleaching a multi million dollar industry. European colonialism shoved its traits and norms down the throat of Africans and infiltrated standards of beauty in every aspect. Beauty was measured ...

Uganda Cities, Municipalities and Towns should be a place worthy to call home.

Image
Uganda's capital city of Kampala is also by far the largest town in the country. The city is both the capital of Uganda and the backbone to the country’s economy. Despite the city dynamic and engaging activities, the growth and development is at snail’s pace and employment opportunities in the city are dwindling, so are the living conditions. Kampala has a population of around 1,659,600 as of the mid-year count taken in 2011. Apart from Kampala there are other Cities in Uganda such as Mbarara , Jinja, Mukono, Masaka, Lira, Hoima, Fort Portal and Gulu. In contrast to such other major cities in Africa as Nairobi and Lagos, Ugandan cities are not sprawled or overpopulated. The rate of crime is low, and the cities are way safer. The towns have a fast growing economy and are expected to grow into commercial hubs and fringes to "de-localize" and decentralize the already overcrowding Kampala. ...

Patrice Lumumba's life and betrayal by his confidants and rise of Mobutu.

Image
Ã‰mery Patrice Lumumba was born on the 2nd of July 1925 in the Kasai province of what is now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was once a postal clerk and also a traveling beer salesman. Lumumba had a dazzling smile, and a signature pair of spectacles. He had 3 wives. But it was when he got into politics that Lumumba became truly dangerous to the old colonial order.   Belgium received the colony from King Leopold II, in 1908, and sustained an oppressive colonial system. It was frankly one of the most hideous colonial powers in a practice (colonization),  the native social structure was destroyed and introduced forced labor, mutilation, slavery in rubber in rubber plantations, rape and mass murder. Since there was no one free to hunt or grow crops, starvation resulted, and with it disease. Between 1880 and 1920, the Belgium Congo lost approximately half of its population. An estimated 8 to 10 million Africans died as victims of King Leopold’s “rubbe...

Thomas Sankara Luminary Son of AFRICA. ‘Homeland or death, we will triumph’

Image
Born Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara on 21 Dec 1949, in what was then called Upper Volta, Sankara was the 3rd of 10 children. He is remembered as a Pan-African, a revolutionary, a president, a musician and an upright man. His parents wanted him to be a priest, he wanted to be a doctor, but when corruption prevented him from getting into medical school, he became a soldier. He was a very talented musician, who believed the power of music as a force for building community.   Sankara’s position in the army and his natural charisma made him a good choice for political appointments, but his personal convictions also meant that he was often arrested. In May 1983, Sankara was removed as prime minister of then President Ouédraogo’s government and arrested once again. On August 4, 1983, Compaoré, led a group that freed Sankara, overthrew the Ouédraogo regime, and formed the National Council of the Revolution (Conseil National de la Révolution) and Sankara became its president. Pr...

My personal Celestial Observation of social media banter, hate, malice and propaganda.

Image
Be humble, nothing in life is permanent. When the weather changes what becomes of you? When I realized this years ago during the covid pandemic, I decided to be different in my approach in life. I built relationships from there and went on to venture in new horizons, enrolled in school and started a new life with a new career miles away from a place i call home. Long story short im making waves now. This is how we build a nation.   I'm writing this maybe to encourage you not to get too carried away. One day we will wake up and maybe you will have no social media audience. Then what? Reality will stare you in the face and the imperialists paying vituperative hirelings will no longer pick your calls. I just thought I share this with you on a candid note because most of you will share the future with me or my kids. I should care for posterity sake. We mostly determine what our society becomes because we are actually society. When you get paid for being hateful ...

My personal Celestial Observation on unemployment, job hunting and connections in Uganda.

Image
This is how Uganda works from a perspective you have never seen, heard or be taught in school. The most potent means of getting visibility is competency cum discipline in what you do passionately and the other is your relationship.   This is a twin concept in any ideal situation where one can’t do without the other unless in Uganda where competency is supplanted under the heavy force of tribalism, cronyism and religious bigotry all in the name of connection Power.   But I digress to explain the common eccentricity. In ideal cases in our clime Relationship is the most potent. This differs from connection of mere acquaintance to a credible sponsor of repute but having a relationship with someone who can plead your case even in-absentia "gamba n'ogu'. This concept is also connected with the relationship between activism and advocacy. We all have the rights and capability to protest or show discontent for authorities to appeal or address us as a crowd but only a ...

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE CHINA'S LEADER. A TOUGH JOURNEY.

Image
Unlike so-called "democratic countries," the Chinese people value experience more than votes or other abilities for government officials. From the Sui Dynasty on (1400 years ago), officials were selected and promoted by examination, not by blood or birth. In today's China, if you want to enter politics, you have to take a hard and competitive road. Whether you come from a grassroots family or a political family, you have to go through every step. Only in this way, you can reach the top of power, like President Xi. First, you have to own a college degree, at least for most Chinese govt officials. You have to take the national civil service examination and be admitted. In 2019, 92000 people took the exam and 14537 were admitted, with the admission rate of 1.58%. The ruling party in China is the CPC. In addition, there are 8 other parties. You have to join one of them. If your ideal is to become the supreme leader of China, most Chinese join the CPC with 90 milli...

Uganda/Buganda divorce, Buganda Federal/Secession an unrealistic and unachievable dream.

Image
Several important developments that have continued to affect Uganda politics in the postcolonial period marked the period of colonial rule. First, British colonial rule nurtured the divide and rule policy which has remained the classic cleavage in the country. In particular, after the 1900 agreement between the British and Buganda Kingdom to protect the kingdoms civilization. The agreement gave Buganda a head start, especially in Western education, religion, trade and politics. Other kingdoms were shut off from much of the Westernizing influences to which Buganda was exposed. Baganda were seen as traitors for collaborating with the colonialists. Buganda declared its Independence on 1 January 1961—and it nearly tore the kingdom apart. It was a decision that provoked outcry throughout the kingdom, and for some in the Lukiiko.  The new Agreement of 1961 provoked immediate outcry throughout the kingdom, resulting in hundreds of petitions for the Lukiiko to resign.  God...

ORIGIN OF THE PHRASE "EZI MBAGUTA YATEIRE MUHA"

Image
In Banyankore culture, you must have always heard a phrase "Nibakuteera Ezi mbaguta yateire muha" Meaning you will be given lashes like those which Mbaguta gave the fox.  This is the historical Origin of that phrase In 1895, Omugabe Ntare died and immediately, Kahisi Mwene Mutambuka announced himself as the new king of Ankore. This however was rejected by prime minister Nuwa Mbaguta who said the rightful person to the throne was Kahaya Mwene Igumira. There was a disagreement between the two factions that almost caused the bloodshed. Owek Nuwa Mbaguta sent messengers to Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda asking him for military support. Kabaka Mwanga accepted but gave terms and conditions that Ankore should also be ready to help Buganda with manpower in fighting against the British. Buganda officials travelled to Ankore to deliver the message. Owek Nuwa Mbaguta didn't understand Luganda well. He ordered everyone in the Palace to keep quiet as he was listening...

Uganda and Tanzania sign the oil pipeline treaty.

Image
President Yoweri Museveni  of Uganda and his counterpart President Samia Suhulu Hassan of  Tanzania were joined by the two oil companies of Total E&P, and China’s CNOOC to finally  sign the East African Crude Oil Pipeline in the Capital Kampala . The  deal will  ensure oil production begins and is transported in the longest heated pipeline  in the world to the coast in Tanga by 2025. The historic signing ceremony at State House, Entebbe  was held on the day when fighting forces from Tanzania liberated Uganda from the brutal regime of dictator Idi Amin Dada 42 years ago . President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, said that he chose to work with Tanzania because of its historical contribution towards Uganda. “I originally preferred an oil refinery only because of the high demand in the East African region that imports a lot to serve their markets. The oil companies were biased for crude oil exports and a pipeline. The compromise was we have both,...

Gen Museveni's key achievements for the Republic of Uganda.

Image
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is the president of the Republic of Uganda since 1986. Museveni’s greatest achievement was to stabilize the political dispensation. This is reflected in three critical areas where Uganda’s state fragility was most reflected: incessant military coups and civil wars. Museveni ended these and reestablished the state’s monopoly over the exercise of violence. This allowed him to build a stable and continuous presidency that has lasted nearly three and a half decades. To achieve these aims, Museveni took effective personal control over the security apparatus and disciplined the army, making it subordinate to his personal will. He also ensured good relations with the western powers (much about this later), and established some degree of individual freedom. Museveni’s second greatest achievement has been to initiate economic growth and to sustain it over 34 years. Uganda’s economy has grown at an annual average rate of nearly 7% during...

Uganda launches covid-19 vaccination campaign!

Image
Uganda, today Wednesday 10th March 2021 has began vaccinating high-priority healthcare workers, journalists, against coronavirus, as initial consignments of the long-awaited drugs began to be rolled out in East Africa. In Uganda, the Minister of Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng was the first to receive the jab, after the drugs arrived in the country on Monday. Dr Acheng Ruth after the jab “I feel great that I have taken the Covid vaccine and I urge other health workers not to fear. The vaccine is safe,”  Uganda has launched its national vaccination program, two days after receiving 100,000 additional doses of the Covid-19 vaccine donated by the Indian government. So far, Uganda has received 964,000 doses of the vaccine through donations. The launch was held at the Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital at Mulago.
