REASONS FOR STAGNATION OF UGANDAs ART INDUSTRY.

So many promising actors, artistes, writers, directors and producers in Uganda's entertainment industry but what is lacking is the right synergy, collaboration and advocacy to establish the intellectual rights framework to make the apparent industry functional as a true mine.

To every art there is an underlying science and to every science there must be a corresponding art of presentation which makes it appealing for engagement. There is a reason why we have two hemispheres in our brain.

A movie without the right scientific research that enables the connection and relatability will fall flat. There is a reason behind music scores and soundtracks to stimulate the viewers and facilitate connection and the psychology works.

Some guy called Collins working with UCC once established the first of its kind studio in Mbarara (RAIL 24) in 2018, a fully furnished studio with modern technology, equipment and personnel. But how many movie producers understood the essence of this or could afford it in a country where movies are produced in 7days?

No society thrives without the contribution of arts and sciences. Every one is important and every contribution is critical. When engaging culture all means and medium come to play. The poets are as important as the engineers, scientists and soldiers. This is the balance.

The problem however with most Ugandan creatives is their hurry to make a hit which waters down the quality of their art. Don’t burn time seeking attention but do your due diligence on the science behind the art you want the world to pay attention to. It’s an opportunity to contribute to national development and personal legacy.

I rarely watch Ugandan movies because in the past many have tried my patience and betrayed my trust. Some are just too painful to watch while others try too much to showcase production prowess while the message is lost in the display of opulence that’s alien to our society.

Story telling is the critical path of any marketing process. Even for scientific discoveries or presentation of a course. You are creating awareness and recruiting evangelists who spread the message having established ownership of the idea via common grounds. This is a template.

I grew up watching Abafirika Entertainers, Kigezi Kinimba Actors, Ankole Actors, Banyakitara and Rugo Actors back in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. they left an indelible impression in me with movies such as Rutamirika, omwana w'abandi, tindarwetsire etc. They're masterpieces that are still relevant till this day because they highlighted and interpreted our day to day lives.

I know many were not born when these series debuted but look for them. The only thing that rivaled that production are the Rutamirika movies, another epic two part movie in Runya-Kitara that rocked my world till date. It was as real as me looking out my window. A lot is happening now in our society that movies can highlight to spread the message of key advocacies. The funding will come.

Artists no one can adequately pay for your work if the cut, color and clarity is the be observed as done in any diamond trade. They must stand the test of time and serve as historic pieces. This is why there is such a thing as royalties. Genuine piece of art can not be priced.

I say all these basing on my 10years experience of working with artists, performers, actors, producers, designers, djs, presenters, directors and sponsors.

Artist united you stand, otherwise you will keep falling. OBUSINGYE
