Ankore Kingdom palace under renovation at Kamukuzi Mbarara

The renovated Royal Palace in Kamukuzi for Omugabe of Ankore.

The Palace was built in 1950, by Omugabe Charles Godfrey Gatsyonga II.

Omugabe Kahaya was the first king to set base on Kamukuzi Hill, mbarara in 1900.

Currently the Ankore kingdom assets and royal legalia are in the hands of crown Prince Charles Aryaija Rwebishengye Barigye (2011 todate),
heir to Prince John Patrick Barigye (died in 2011) and crown prince of Ankole kingdom, His coronation was nullified by government in 1993, but that appears not to have stopped some people from actually referring to the late Ankole Prince John Patrick Barigye as their king and treating him as such..

The Ankole kingdom like other Ugandans cultural kingdoms was banned by the Obote 1 government. While many other kingdoms were restored after the 1993 restitutions of Cultural Institutions Act, Ankole was suspiciously not allowed to operate again as a kingdom. Prince Barigye thus lived as a king that wasn’t a king and his legacy as a monarch is an unclear one.
