H.E YK Museveni pledged to work with Archbishop Bainomugisha to strengthen the state-church union.

Following the appointment of bishop Beinomugisha Lambert by pope Francis on April 25th 2020, today 20th June 2020 the archdiocese of Mbarara installed their second archbishop scientifically a new normal that has dawned because of Covid19 pandemic

Lambert Bainomugisha has been installed as Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese at Nyamitanga in Mbarara almost two months since Pope Francis appointed him to replace Paul Bakyenga on April 25.


Born in 1961, Bainomugisha was ordained priest 30 years later in 1991. He was auxiliary bishop for 15 years, and also served as an apostolic administrator of Hoima Diocese whose then Bishop Deo Byabazeire was ill.

Archbishop Bakyenga had clocked retirement age in June 2019 after serving for 21 years, and asked to retire. Bakyenga had succeeded Bishop John Baptist Kakubi who was appointed in June 1969 and resigned in November 1991. Kakubi had taken over from Bishop Jean- Marie- Gaetan Ogez of Missionaries of Africa who was appointed in December 1956 and resigned in November 1968. Before Bishop Ogez was Bishop Francois- Xavier Lacoursiere, also of Missionaries of Africa, who was appointed in May 1934 and resigned in April 1956.

The event was attended by few people compared to those who would have been in attendance if there were no restrictions on public gatherings as a way to prevent the spread of Covid19.

Top officials from government and church attended the scientific inauguration. Bishop Robert Muhirwa of Fort Portal Diocese,  Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira of Kasese Diocese, Kasese Diocese Bishop Emeritus Egidio Nkaijanabwo, Kabale Diocese Bishop Callistus Rubaramira, Bishop Vincent Kirabo of Hoima Diocese, Pope’s representative in Uganda (Nuncio) Archbishop Luigi Bianco and Ankole Anglican Bishop Frederick Sheldon Mwesigwa graced the event.


Laity Council Chairman Gervase Ndyanabo praised Bainomugisha for his exemplary leadership and priesthood basing on which the Holy Father saw it fit to appoint him Archbishop. He pledged prayers and to continue working with him in the apostolate.

From government, Ministers Raphael Magyezi (Local Government), Kahinda Otafiire (East African Affairs), John Byabagambi (Karamoja Affairs), and MPs Thomas Tayebwa (Ruhinda North) and Francis Mwijukye (Buhweju were also in attendance.

Before he invited Minister Magyezi, who represented the president at the event, Otafiire cautioned people against complacence in the wearing of face masks, saying failure to follow the guidelines could be fatal. He also urged Bainomugisha to keep believers united.

Museveni assured Bainomugisha of his support and promised to work with him to strengthen the state-church union. He also lauded Bakyenga for the excellent relationship the Archdiocese enjoyed with government under his reign as Archbishop. H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni offered a brand new Mitsubishi land cruiser and 20m cash towards the archbishop.
